With an impossibly vibrant cocktail of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, techno and funk, New Zealand’s legendary seven-piece jam band Fat Freddy’s Drop has been shaking audiences to their collective bones for more than two decades.
In a career that’s taken the Drop from Wellington to the global stage, the band has sailed through sunshine reggae into the colour-saturated field of psychedelia, dancing around the hard contours of Detroit-inflected techno to find a unique funk. Known for eclectic improvised sets capable of holding a groove for hours on end, Fat Freddy’s Drop is the ultimate live jam.
Laid low by the pandemic, the band concocted the bush-alchemy album and concert film WAIRUNGA – a boil-up of Afro-Acid beats, hot buttered soul and righteous reggae. Supported by the soulful sounds of WILSN when they hit Sydney this January, what Fat Freddy’s has in store for us is anyone’s guess. But you know it’s going to slap.
