Contemporary Asian Australian Performance

Our bond with the sea is explored in this enchanting work of shadow theatre. Perahu-Perahu, which means “boats” in Indonesian, is a new collaboration between artist Jumaadi and composer Michael Toisuta, both of whom grew up in Indonesia before moving to Sydney.

Breathing life into the ancient storytelling technique of shadow play, Jumaadi and Toisuta will combine splendid imagery and live music to immerse you in a fusion of old and new. Hundreds of intricate cut-outs trip the light fantastic in a provocative yet playful piece inspired by the vessels that have sailed the perilous route between the Indonesian archipelago and Australia for centuries.

Presented by Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP), responsible for so many brilliant new works on the Asian Australian experience, Perahu-Perahu is a surreal adventure into new lands. A celebration of journeys across the sea. A history of strange encounters, disasters and triumphs – and a beautiful evening of entertainment.
